Nail Salon

Introducing Nail Salon, a collaborative project by curator & artist Giancarlo Corbacho, which seeks to challenge the institutionalization and hierarchy of the contemporary gallery as an inaccessible space for artists.

Through collaboration with specialized nail technician Ben Jen and artist Ben Ross Davis, Giancarlo intends to curate a series of exhibitions through the transformation of his hands into a space to experience art.

Each exhibition will be available for purchase and archived for viewing digitally and physically by appointment.

CRYPSIS

Pride by Papercut

I'll be exhibiting some new work from my Phantom Limb series alongside some other rad queers at Pride, an event organized by my good friends over at Papercut Press! CALL FOR ART: ˈäbjəkt | OBJECT | əbˈjekt

The physical and psychological resonance of any particular object manifests itself in a multitude of ways from person to person. Experience and aesthetic preferences form unintended correlations w/in the individual which correspond to the larger perceptions of how one engages w/ their world. In film, particularly, an object [or a prop] can often carry a pivotal intention in the development of an auteur's worlds and characters which reflects in the viewer under their own specific circumstance.

ˈäbjəkt | OBJECT | əbˈjekt [subject to change] invites fellow artists to reassess / reconstruct / reinterpret a film prop which has severely impacted their viewing experience. The intent of this proposal is for artists to explore the tangible and intangible values of the object they decide upon and through it shed light on their perception of the world: fictional or not.

Proposals for review should be forwarded to my email address [click HERE] by Wednesday, January 16th. Artists which are accepted will be notified via email by Friday, January 18th, at which point the final due date for work will be Thursday, February 28th, 2013.

All interested participants should provide the following information: name, website [or a PDF w/ samples of work], statement of intent [250 words or less], and a series of sketches of their piece [size & media a huge plus]

CREEPS'd OUT!

After a craaaazy two months and some change, the CREEPS III Release and Collective Show at Ed. Varie came and went w/ no casualties and a great sense of accomplishment! Many, many thanks to all my friends and, most importantly, the rest of the CREEPS core who showed tremendous support and work ethic to make sure this bebe saw the light of day!

The third incarnation of CREEPS Annual is jam-packed w/ the work of thirty-three artists of all kinds of flava flaves bound into three books w/ screen printed coatings and wrapped tightly in a die-cut sleeve collaboration between my siamese twin, Nina Carelli, and I. Extra bonuses include two screen printed posters based on my humiliation and A (Ode to Nauman) videos and a first-time CREEPS Collective collaboration: the Paperbabe!

SHAME

SHAME is the first in a series of masks I'm working on which was in the Spaghetti Suicide FUNERAL show over the weekend at Y Gallery. Check out my first video piece, humiliation, (which was integral in the making of SHAME) along with a peek at the show below!

...also, if you're in the tri-state area: my favorite dreamboat of all time, Jim Henson, has a retrospective at the Museum of the Moving Image. The exhibition, aside from some distracting signage introducing each era of his ouvre, is impeccably designed and worth the trip out to Astoria for any enthusiast of his work. How else will you be able to brag about seeing Miss Piggy in her 80s Bride-zilla eleganza!?

If you make it out there before November 16th, you'll be able to catch Henson's Time Piece, one of the most charming and clever short films I've ever seen. CHECK IT OUUUT!

Mariachi de Malaguas



NEW PRINT!...kinda. Originally, I completed it as a digital piece (YUCK) for an in-school assignment;but, as usual, I wasn't fulfilled come the final. Mostly because my heart is with printmaking, not the computer. Super psyched about my mastery of printing transparent colors and gradients in this piece...okay, just kidding...mastery has yet to come!

...although, this is the most delicious gradient I've printed to date. Its a good day when the gods of printmaking are on your side! :)

I also finished a second print which is a combination of the pieces I illustrated for the short story, Laura's House, for the recently printed issue of Instigatorzine, but I didn't want to piece it together digitally with the baby scanner I had to use for the print above...so please bear with me!

In other news, I've finally freed myself from the grips of lethargy and submitted a piece to the annual Postcards from the Edge show...which I'm reeeeally excited about! Its for an amazing cause and has a fun twist to it; its all anonymous...unless you purchase the postcard! For a pretty inexpensive amount (and, in effect, donating to a good cause) you could have yourself the art of some extraordinaire out there!

Keeping in line with the theme of the show, I won't reveal mine til after January 8th when the show comes down, but I will tell you that its titled Eye Keep Losing All My Teeth and Friends. Hope you can make it out to any of the three showings!

This will probably be my last post for the year! WHUUUT!? I hope you all have an awesome holiday filled with all your faves and the best times to ring in the new year. Hope you'll stick around for the adventures in 2011!!

Live Electronics

Since my last update, my friend, Narciso Espiritu, has invited me on board the illustration staff of a local literary zine, Instigatorzine, which is gaining popularity and expanding its distribution at a quickening pace! Above is my second submission for the upcoming October issue, which you can pick up at any of the distributors or order online via the website. CHECK IT OUT!...and lets pretend my first submissions never happened!

I finished it in two days and I only used 3 separations, which in my experience is unheard of. PROUD!

Another collaborative effort I've been enlisted for by head creep, Nina Carelli, The CREEPS Collective, is having its Zine Release Launch Party and Gallery Exhibition (which I will be a part of) from 7:00 - 9:00 PM at CULTUREfix in the LES.
